Zen Pinball was always a good pinball simulation, but the effects in these tables are nothing short of amazing. These are the ones that have stood the test of time.ġ0) Zen Pinball 2 ( PSN download ) – This PSN title is a relatively new one, and yet the 3D effects are eye-popping amazing. I scoured dozens of review sites, retail sites, and blogs dating from the first 3D games, and compiled this list based on which ones were mentioned the most times, which ones elicited the most positive comments, and which ones were mentioned consistently time and time again. In celebration of the denouement of 3D on the Playstation I decided to try to put together a definitive list of the all time best stereoscopic 3D games to ever grace the Playstation 3. A shame, because to this day I use the monitor as a secondary monitor for my PC and love it, and of course it’s still the primary monitor I use to watch 3d Blurays and play 3D games. The monitor was (and is) still a great one, but there were too many idiosyncrasies about it–it didn’t come with a built-in tuner for TV or cable, it didn’t have a remote control, the volume control and configuration buttons were annoying as heck to use, and so on. I, of course, was one of those who ran out and bought it at full price, only to find out months later that they couldn’t move units at a fraction of the price I paid. Second, Sony’s experiment a few years ago to make 3D a household word just like they did with Blu-ray, by selling a deeply discounted 3D monitor, was largely a bust. But with barely less than half that number of PS3, it’s likely we’ll be seeing the end of the line for a lot of our favorite PS3 games. Back when the PS3 was launched, there were 155 million PS2 units out there, and ensuring backwards compatibility with PS2 games was a major demand. If you want the short version, all you need to know is that the game sounds like pinball, and you'll hear everything you'd expect to hear at the arcade. In a lot of ways we’ve come a long way since 3D was first announced for the Playstation 3.įirst, with the coming of the PS4 this year, the days of the PS3, of course, are numbered. Read my original review of Zen Pinball for a full explanation. I don't really have anything to say about the sound, other than the fact that it's on par with that of the other tables. But in all honesty, they had me at "hostile robot aliens from the deep reaches of space in a pinball game." When your ball is saved, the alien fires the ball out of his cannon, giving the little metallic sphere a bright magenta hue for a few seconds. The giant robot alien that looms over the table has a red dot matrix face that takes many forms, from an angry face to a snide face to. First off, I dare you not to laugh when you see the tagline at the center of the table. ![]() Zen Pinball is all about the details, and Earth Defense is full of them. ![]() Did I mention that the aliens also happen to be ROBOTS? It's not a sign of bad artistic design rather, it's a sign of reverence for the subject matter, which has been heavily (and deservedly) lampooned over the years. The aliens themselves look really, really stupid. Oh noes, aliens! Yep, Zen Pinball has taken that ages-old B-movie cliché and given it the Tommy treatment. Well, there aren't any giant ants on this table, but the table is certainly loaded with Japanese-style quirkiness. When I got my review code for Zen Pinball: Earth Defense, my mind immediately jumped to the cult classic Earth Defense Force 2017. ![]() I wouldn't be surprised in the least bit if they eventually decide to go down any of those paths, but here, I was surprised. Based on the trend Zen Studios seemed to be following, I predicted a table based on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, God of War III, or inFAMOUS. ![]() To be honest, I was expecting another game-themed table. This is really the only component that isn't exactly shared by all of Zen Pinball's downloadable tables.
